Economic transitions and political reforms in Eurasia and the Middle East seem to still be ongoing or incomplete. At the same time, the presence of Russia in Eurasia and the Middle East through its influence on the economy and politics of both regions has become more intense, despite sanctions and conditions of conflict between Russia and the West. The multifaceted and diverse environment of Alexandria offers a unique setting for the Winter Academy, as this historical city has been for several centuries a center of trade, development and culture in Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. During the Winter Academy on Global Challenges in Eurasia & the Middle East, our purpose is to explore the challenge of MENA convergence with Western Europe and Eurasia as well as to discuss entangled cultural histories and the politics of heritage in Eurasia and the Middle East.

We invite master students, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers focusing on political science, economics, law, history, sociology and cultural studies to engage in discussions and provide presentations on topics of economic policy and development, international security, heritage and cosmopolitan built-in environments, history and entrepreneurship. Speakers include renowned international scholars that intend to set a new agenda for the comparative study of Eurasia & the Middle East.

A complete application package for the DAAD Winter Academy includes a cover letter and a CV including a transcript of grades from the candidate's most recent degree. Incomplete applications will not be considered for selection. Doctoral and post-doctoral researchers are especially welcome. Selected participants will receive a full coverage of travel (650 Euro/person) and stay costs (65 Euro/day) in Alexandria during their participation to the Winter Academy on Global Challenges in Eurasia & the Middle East.
